EKU Mock Trial Earns 2 Bids to Nationals

Both mock trial teams from Eastern Kentucky University qualified for national competition with their performance in the American Mock Trial Association regional tournament hosted by Kennesaw State University on February 24-25, 2012.

The EKU teams finished sixth and seventh out of 24 teams, earning bids to the 2012 Carol N. Ney National Mock Trial Tournament to be held at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., March 23-25.  EKU was the only school that earned multiple bids at the Kennesaw regional tournament.

EKU’s sixth-place team finished 6-2, winning rounds against Georgia Tech and the University of South Carolina and splitting ballots with Emory University and Kennesaw State University.

EKU’s seventh-place team finished 5-2-1, rallying after an opening-round loss against Duke University to go 5-0-1 in the remaining three rounds against Georgia College, the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, and Emory University.

EKU’s Zac Caldwell (from Elizabethtown) and Corey Davis (from Louisville) received All-Region Witness Awards. Caldwell, a senior, recorded a perfect 20 ranks on the prosecution side of the case.

Joining Davis on the sixth-place team were: Katherine Hall (Mt. Sterling), Marcus Segura (Fort Thomas), Damir Siahkoohi (Irvine), Bennett Parker (Fort Thomas), Rachel Hepburn (Waldorf, Md.), Haley Gearheart (Franklin, Va.), Sara Robinson (Richmond), and Jade Petty (Stanton).

Joining Caldwell on the seventh-place team were: Alexandra Sipes (Mt. Sterling), Katelyn Connor (Erlanger), Chloe Richardson (Orient, OH), Caleb Taylor (Union), Anthony Sean Potter (Whitesburg), Josh Lang (Fort Thomas), and Ryan Black (Louisville).
