EKU Mock Trial Places Fourth at Commodore Classic

Eastern Kentucky University’s Mock Trial Team concluded a very successful invitational season with a fourth-place finish at the Commodore Classic, hosted by Vanderbilt University in Nashvile, Tennessee. EKU finished with a 5-2-1 record, prevailing in rounds against Duke University, Florida State University, and Washington University in St. Louis before falling to the host school and tournament champion, Vanderbilt University, in the final round.

Angel Spurlock, a chemistry teaching major from Mount Vernon, earned an Outstanding Witness Award at the tournament. Other members of the EKU team included Matt Boggs, a political science major from Whitesburg; Troy Cox, a retired Navy veteran and paralegal science major from Lexington; Josh Lang, a political science major from Fort Thomas; Allie Maples, a political science major from Mount Sterling; Sean Potter, a political science major from Whitesburg; and Caleb Taylor, a political science major from Union.  Boggs, Lang, Maples, Potter, and Spurlock are all members of the EKU Honors Program.

EKU's historically successful invitational season included:

  • 1st place - Windy City Invitational (Northwestern University, Chicago, IL)
  • 2nd place - Spartan Throwdown Invitational (Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH)
  • 4th place - Commodore Classic (Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN)
  • 5th place - School of Public Affairs Mock Trial Invitational (American University, Washington, DC)
  • 5th place - Illinois State University Mock Trial Invitational (Normal, IL)
  • 7th place - Arch Invitational (Washington University, St. Louis, MO)

EKU's team will compete next at the American Mock Trial Association's regional tournament at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, on February 21-22, 2015. The top eight teams from that 28-team tournament will advance to the AMTA Opening Round Championship Tournament in Louisville.

EKU faculty and staff working with the program include Tom Parker, Lynnette Noblitt, Kristeena Johnson, Brandon Williams, and Sara Zeigler.
